Background . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

IMBISA Refugee Service is a Catholic Church non-governmental Church organization that has the mandate to respond to the needs of refugees' migrant people and displaced persons in the Southern Africa region.  In providing pastoral care the organization sometimes faces challenges to respond quickly to both natural and man made emergencies like floods, drought disasters and political warfare.

Misson Statement . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

In carrying out the mission of Jesus Christ IMBISA Refugee Service animates and coordinates the efforts of the Church in Southern Africa, in order to welcome the asylum seekers, refugees and internally displaced persons so as to promote the restoration of hope, self-confidence and human dignity.

Objectives . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

To promote the formation of and develop training programs for pastoral agents which includes cross border exchanges to sensitize these agents to the life experiences of refugees and asylum seekers in host countries and countries of origin.

To seek to address the root causes of displacement through the promotion of peace building activities such as encouraging Church  led dialogue between warring factions and the implementation of training programs on peace building in collaboration with Justice and Peace Commission.

To engage the Church in advocacy and awareness-raising to facilitate refugee integration in host communities.

To encourage coordination with and between Episcopal Conferences and Ecumenical Pastoral structures for the enhancement of pastoral work in refugee, returnee and internally displaced communities.

To work towards the creation of a welcoming environment for refugees, asylum seekers, and the internally displaced that facilitates the full participation and integration into the grassroots activities of the local Church.

IMBISA Refugee Service co-ordinates, animates and supports the pastoral care of refugees within the IMBISA region itself as well as abroad and also neighboring countries where refugees from the IMBISA region have sought asylum.  Apart from pastoral care, IMBISA Refugee Service addresses other non-material needs of the uprooted people, which are not taken care of by other organizations that are in this ministry.  The organization is not working in isolation but is active and network with other agencies that are doing similar work.
